Fuel Class
The Snohomish County Airport-Paine Field Fire Department, in conjunction with Fliteline Services, offers an Aviation Fuel & Fire Safety Training . This class has been nationally approved by the FAA as one of the acceptable courses for fire safety in fueling on the current CertALert list and meets the FAA Part 139 requirements of Section 139.321, Handling and Storing of Hazardous Substances and Materials.

Class topics include:

  • Fuel quality control procedures &field testing procedures
  • Characteristics of aviation fuels
  • Inspection procedures
  • Importance of record keeping
  • Fuel receiving procedures
  • Fuel quality control programs
  • Fire codes & related standards for fueling
  • Grounding & bonding
  • Fire safety in fuel farms, storage areas, & mobile fuelers
  • Fuel spills & fuel spill procedures
  • Fire behavior, classes of fire &fire triangle
  • Fire extinguishers, types & uses
  • Hands-on use of fire extinguishers on small flammable liquid fires

Lynn Deardorf, F.A.A. Airport Certification Safety Inspector stated:  "The curriculum presented in the Aviation Fuel and Fire Safety Course was excellent. The content of this course was intensive and the material that was provided to the participants will be a valuable resource for future reference. In addition, the instructors demonstrated exceptional knowledge in the subject area . . .. We will recommend this training to fueling personnel at other airports, particularly airports certified under Federal Aviation Regulations, Part 139."

In 2008, the following Aviation Fuel & Fire Safety classes are scheduled at Paine Field Airport in Everett, WA:

  • February 5 & 6, 2008 (Tuesday & Wednesday): 0800-1700
  • October 21 & 22, 2008 (Tuesday & Wednesday): 0800-1700

The class is a 2-day class and the fee is $249 per participant (includes all class materials and a copy of NFPA 407). Following completion of the Fuel & Fire Safety class, participants are provided with a Certificate of Completion.

Course Instructors:
Captain Dennis Hill: Captain Dennis Hill: Captain Hill has been in the fire service for 29 years. He has held the positions of training officer and Captain of fire inspections, and is a certified ICBO fire inspector and NFPA Firefighter I, Evaluator.
Terry Wilcoxson:  Terry Wilcoxson is employed as the operations manager for Fliteline Services at Paine Field. Terry has over 30 years of aircraft fueling experience and holds a commercial pilots license and an A&P certificate.

Extinguisher Class
The Airport Fire Department conducts two levels of fire extinguisher classes for businesses and tenants located at Paine Field Airport.
  • Businesses that dispense fuel need to have their employees trained in the proper use of the large extinguishers carried and used by fuelers. The Fire Department will provide this class upon request.
  • Businesses that have small, wall-mounted extinguishers for use by employees should provide training in their use. The Airport Fire Department will conduct hands-on extinguisher training classes for Airport businesses and tenants. The department tries to present these classes when a group of five or more can be assembled.

Following completion of the extinguisher class, attendees are given a Certificate of Completion.

CPR and First Aid Classes
First Aid and CPR classes are conducted by the Airport Fire Department for businesses and residents of Paine Field Airport.  These classes meet the requirements of the OSHA/WISHA regulations for workplace safety. They also provide the citizen with the knowledge and skill needed in a family or social emergency.

The Airport Fire Department attempts to keep each class size to between 15-20 students.

Upon completion of the First Aid and/or CPR class, students are issued an American Heart Association certification card. The certification is good for two years.
